Giving Back

My skill in building and providing shelter

is how I service God and his children.

ANSWERING
THE CALL

As practicing Christians, giving is something that my family, close friends, church, and community modeled for me. Those skilled at cooking gave food. Those with endless patience nurtured children and the elderly. Those skilled at quilting provided blankets. My skill in building and providing shelter is how I service God and his children. The first time I joined a building mission, I was fourteen. I felt blessed to be working alongside friends, sharing the love of God through selfless labor and it left an indelible impression on me. The idea that we were united in doing the work of Jesus, Himself a carpenter, ignited a passion within me.

Every year I answer the call, teaming up with fellow Christians for three or more weeks to build wherever the need is greatest. Between 1998 and 2005, I had the honor of working on more than nine separate projects spanning from Mexico to Nepal. In 2014, I joined E Force Christian Outreach in location scouting for an orphanage building project in Haiti. More recently, I was invited to act as Program Director for Helping Hands International, a nondenominational Christian organization with the goal to “Share the love of God through practical hands on care. Using whatever means necessary; food, housing, clothing, medical needs, etc.” Multitudes of circumstantial victims in the U.S. and around the world of poverty, war, disease, and natural disasters benefit from the

help and hope Helping Hands International (HHI) delivers. In 2019, I was proud to host members of our Verity team on their first HHI adventure. We are lucky to be able to donate a portion of Verity’s revenue to bring help and hope to those who are hurting around the world. One thing that I have learned, and something that is reinforced each year, is that working with a team of people with shared values and a common goal lifts everyone higher. As a result, my work is more meaningful to me and to those around me. That’s why our aim at Verity is to develop skills and encourage personal growth. Everyone on our team is not only valued for what they bring, but also for who they are. We have just one requirement: show up 100%.
